Applications / Label & Packaging Matrix

Eight Converter Verticals. One Press Matrix.

HP Indigo applications are mapped by volume class, substrate mix and finishing workflow — not by generic marketing segments. Each vertical is paired with a recommended press series and a PrintOS workflow reference.

DEPLOYMENT SIGNALS

Signals That Narrow the Series Choice.

Use these operational signals to pre-select a press family before requesting a demo. The series shortlist is finalised during the site visit and substrate trial.

SIGNAL 01

Monthly Impression Volume

Below 750k A4/mo → 7K / 7900 class. 1-2M B2/mo → 12K. 4M+ B2/mo → 35K. 4-20M A4/mo → 100K. Web at scale → 200K. Volume class drives engine choice before sheet size or colour count.

SIGNAL 02

Substrate Mix Width

Single substrate class (e.g. labels only) → narrow-web platform (6K / 15K / V12). Mixed paper + film + carton → sheet-fed platform (12K / 35K) with Digital Priming. Flexible packaging → dedicated 25K / 35K platform.

SIGNAL 03

Pantone & Brand Colour Pressure

Brand-protection and Pantone-matched work → 7-colour configuration with Pantone Emulation (97% coverage on 12K / 15K / 35K). CMYK-only workflows → baseline 4-colour configuration on any series.

SIGNAL 04

Shift Utilization Target

1-shift → 7K or 6K class. 2-shift → 12K or 15K class. 3-shift → 35K / 100K / 200K class. TCO-per-sheet improves only when the target shift pattern is actually sustained, not when the press runs at peak rate.

MATERIAL & METHOD COMPARISON

Where Indigo Fits Against Alternative Print Methods.

Two method-level comparisons most often drive the Indigo shortlist. Published here in matrix form so the trade-off is visible before the demo.

Decision Axis HP Indigo (Liquid ElectroInk) Sheetfed Offset Dry-Toner Digital
Economic Run Length Below ~5,000 impressions; variable data Above ~5,000 impressions CMYK Below ~2,000 impressions (lower ceiling)
Colour Gamut Up to 7 on-press; Pantone Emulation 97% 4–8 colours with plates CMYK + limited spot toner
Substrate Range 70-400 gsm + films 12-250 µm + 600 µm carton Widest — incl. heavy board >600 µm, metallic Narrower — limited by fuser temperature
Variable Data / Versioning Native — every sheet can be unique Not practical Native
Set-Up / Make-Ready Near-zero; PrintOS job flow Plates, ink, wash-up — 20–60 min Near-zero
Dot Structure on Coated Stock Offset-like (liquid pigment 1-2 µm) Offset native Toner-tell laydown

Crossover ranges reflect typical North American and EU job shops; actual crossover for a specific operation depends on paper grade, spot colour count and finishing workflow.
