Over the past three years, I’ve bought or leased six different digital printers for these emergency runs: an HP Indigo 6900, a couple of Epson wide format printers, and even an Asiga 3D printer for a prototyping rush. Every single purchase taught me something about what to look for when the clock is ticking.

Step 1: Pressure-Test the Speed Claims

Step 4: Verify the “What is a Digital Printer” Basics (Seriously)

I know this sounds basic. But in the middle of a rush purchase, people skip fundamentals. I’m one of them. In my first year, I made the classic specification error: assumed “digital printer” meant the same thing to every vendor. It doesn’t.

  • HP Indigo printing technology is digital. But it’s a liquid toner process, not toner powder or inkjet. That means the output is different—closer to offset quality, but with a slight gloss. If your client expects a matte finish (like a wide format Epson produces), you’ll have problems.
  • Epson wide format printers are inkjet. Great for signage, posters, and proofs. But they’re not designed for 5,000+ sheet runs in one shift. The printheads wear faster. I lost one mid-run in January 2024—cost $800 in replacement and missed a deadline.
  • Asiga 3D printers are a whole different beast. They use UV resin and DLP projection. If you’re thinking, “I’ll just use the same digital printer for both,” no. I tried that. The Asiga creates 3D objects; the HP Indigo produces 2D sheets. They are not interchangeable.

So here’s my checklist for anyone buying a digital printer for rush work: get a 5-sheet sample from the actual machine you plan to buy. Run it on the same stock you’ll use for the emergency job. Check for color matching, drying time, and substrate curl. It takes 30 minutes and has saved me more than once.

Things I Still Screw Up

I’d love to say I’ve mastered this. I haven’t. Just last quarter, I skipped the final review because we were rushing—“it’s basically the same as last time,” I thought. It wasn’t. The substrate was 3% thicker, and the HP Indigo 6900 needed a different pressure setting. We caught it after 200 sheets. $400 mistake. That’s the real cost that adds up when you’re running rush jobs.
