In a small conference room, a line array can actually sound worse than a cheap point source, because the physics fights the room's dimensions. The vertical coverage is tight, so the sound can be uneven: people in the front rows get blasted, while those in the back hear a ghostly version.

The HDL 30A, as I later learned from a candid audio manufacturer, is a professional line array element designed for medium-to-large events (think 200+ seat venues or outdoor stages). Our 30-person conference room? Wrong tool for the job.

The Insider Perspective: Why "One-Size" Audio Manufacturers Are a Red Flag

After five years of managing procurement (roughly 60–80 orders annually across 8–10 vendor categories), I've learned that specialization matters. The audio manufacturer who claims their line array system works equally well in a conference room, a nightclub, and a church? That's a vendor who hasn't been honest about the tradeoffs.

Here's something vendors won't tell you: line array systems are optimized for long-throw applications. The HDL 30A, for example, has a vertical coverage angle of about 10°–15° depending on array length. In a room with a 10-foot ceiling, that's only covering a narrow vertical slice. Point source speakers typically offer 60°–90° coverage—way more forgiving for office environments.

I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises. The audio manufacturer that said, "We make great line arrays for tours, but for your office I'd suggest looking at our point source models or a different brand entirely"—that's the one I keep coming back to.

The Gradual Realization: It Took Me 3 Years to Understand This

When I first started purchasing audio systems, I assumed the lowest quote was always the best choice. Three budget overruns later (the first with audio, later with printing and IT gear), I learned about total cost of ownership. In this case, the "total cost" includes:

  • Base product price – usually comparable for similar brands
  • Installation and tuning – often $500–$2,000 for a medium room
  • Hidden costs of wrong equipment – reorders, temporary rentals, lost productivity
  • Future upgrade costs – if you buy a system that doesn't scale

Now, I always ask the audio manufacturer three things before ordering:

  1. "Is this product designed for small to medium enclosed spaces (under 800 sq ft)?"
  2. "What's the vertical coverage pattern, and how does it work with a 9-foot ceiling?"
  3. "If I wanted a line array instead, what specific scenario would it be better for?"

The third question is the test. A professional who can clearly articulate tradeoffs is worth their weight in goodwill.

The Brief Solution: Know Your Space, Then Choose the Right Tool

After all this, what actually worked for our office? A simple point source system: two powered 8-inch two-way speakers with a small subwoofer, arranged for even coverage. Cost was $2,200 total (product + install). The audio manufacturer we worked with specialized in commercial installations—they didn't push line arrays because they knew better.

If your venue is a large hall, gymnasium, or outdoor space, line array speakers like the HDL 30A are probably a better choice. For boardrooms, classrooms, break rooms, or small venues under 500 people, stick with point source. The line array system isn't better or worse—it's designed for a different job.

In my opinion, the most honest audio manufacturers are the ones who tell you when you're looking at the wrong product. That's the vendor I'd trust with my next purchase.
