Granted, there is a middle ground: if you need variable data on A5 labels or forms, then a small digital press makes sense. But that is Scenario A, not C. Do not buy a pro press for the school run.

Scenario D: The 3D Printer House Distraction

Additive manufacturing has evolved, and some construction companies now use large 3D printers to build walls and even entire homes. It is an exciting sign that the industry is evolving. It will not replace sheet-fed or roll-fed digital printing for packaging, labels, or commercial documents. Different materials, different scale, different buyer.

What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. The fundamentals of quality—color consistency, dimensional stability, accurate registration—have not changed. But the range of options has. A construction project may need large-format extrusion; your customer's premium label still needs a press that can hit a defined target with a tight Delta E.

How to Decide: A Simple Guide

By now you can see the pattern. Answer four questions:

  1. What is your primary substrate? Paper or film → HP Indigo digital printing. Rigid board → UV flatbed. Paper only at low volume → A5 office printer or outsourced production.
  2. What is the typical run length? Long runs of identical items? A digital press may not be the cheapest route. Short runs and variable data? Digital wins.
  3. Do you need brand-color accuracy? If yes, specify Delta E < 2 and test the press at your facility before acceptance. Do not rely on the vendor's demo file.
  4. How will you support the machine in five years? If you are looking at a used HP Indigo 6900, ask for service records, installation history, and current firmware versions.

I will not tell you that one press is perfect for everyone. I will say that, in 2025, the costliest mistake I see is not choosing a bad brand—it is choosing a press designed for a different workflow. (Surprise, surprise.) Match the machine to the substrate and run length, and you will be fine.
